When you are doing a public speaking engagement, one way to build rapport with an audience is to include information about your family. Most people in the audience get the warm fuzzies when you mention your spouse or kids in a positive light. Of course, you do run the risk that a few people in the audience may not like their spouse or kids. Generally the benefits of talking about your family members (as a public speaking technique) far outweigh the risks.
